The horizon of your life is suddenly stretched—wide and wild, far and free.
So here’s my prayer for you as you travel light toward all that newness and your soul stretches too.
May there be laughter, good music, good coffee, good food (and cheap food). May you find gems in the Aldi bargain aisle and insane Clubcard deals.
May all your WhatsApp groups keep you deeply and meaningfully connected to far-flung family and friends. (We’re a text and a train away, 24/7.)
May you stay curious and choose kindness and courage in every interaction. May you lead and lean in—have a go and cheer for the reticent. May you seek always to be more interested than interesting, remembering that as long as you still have something to prove, you’ll never be free.
May you find your way, and find your friends, and plant yourself in a community of God’s people to serve and be served, to love and be loved, and to walk with the wise.
May you learn to perfectly balance rest and resilience (and rowing) (and reading too late into the night). May you be known for your soft heart and strong spirit—gratitude that fends off entitlement and commitment that deflects flakiness.
When you’re overwhelmed, may you remember that life is not an emergency. There are new mercies each morning, enough time each day to do God’s will, and more than enough space inside your skin for you to feel absolutely comfortable.
May you know that whenever you offer your gifts to the world, you usher in the power, presence, and purposes of God. May you look for opportunities to be generous with all you are and all you have, remembering how much you’ve been given.
May you discover brain-bending truth in hallowed halls where thousands of bright minds have studied for centuries before you, and may you plumb the depths of your potential.
May you daily surrender your ideas and ambitions to the God who is writing your story and whose call on your life is irrevocable. May He give you extraordinary wisdom as you stand at the crossroads and listen for His voice: This is the way; walk in it. May you keep in step with the Spirit, leading your own life well and knowing that others will follow you as you follow Jesus.
May you hone all your adulting skills—laundry and cooking and budgeting and part-time working and self-regulating in All The Things. May you find your grownup groove—figuring out where to invest your capacity and when to say the right no to free you up for the best yes.
May you keep on doing the next right thing, knowing that small change adds up. May you make every decision with the ultimate in mind, not the immediate.
May you never forget that habits determine character, and character determines destiny. May you sow in times of famine, because when the rains do come, you’ll be glad you had seed in the ground.
May you know that Jesus is only ever bringing His Kingdom and He causes all things to work together for your good, so no matter what, everything is actually always working out for you.
May God light up the path ahead of you and may you be aware of all the ways He hems you in from behind. He sings over you, and underneath you are His everlasting arms!
May you run into your future with the resurrection power of your Redeemer, because you’re more than a conqueror and never a victim and nothing can separate you from God’s love. May you relax in the truth that the man who walks with God always reaches his destination.
May you get enough sleep. And enough fibre in your diet.
May you find joy in the ordinary, because then the extraordinary will take care of itself. May you never lose your sense of humour or your sense of wonder, and may you live the story you’d love to tell one day.
May the joy of the Lord be your strength.
And call your mother. She worries.
