My car smells of Deep Heat and sweat
And you litter my life wondrous – unserious – with
Clementine peels Instagram reels Vinted sweet deals and dreams.
Your hands blistered by boat blades and cricket bats
Keep growing tender and tough,
Tapping out the rhythm of this flying time in texts and on piano keys.
I see how the hurt puts hair on your chest
And at best tears at your soft heart
For a Saviour who bled to stitch whole again with hope.
I see how the crush makes you blush
Like so much heatwave sunburn
And how you come for late-night tea-drinking,
Sprawled with the dog at the end of our bed
For prayers and out-loud processing
and last laughs of a day lived loud –
Before a nearly-midnight protein shake and one more podcast –
It’s late –
Turn out the light –
But please never ever turn out your own.
