Of iChange and iAM

As an iTeacher, I’m educating the iBoys in my iClasses for iJobs that don’t exist yet. It’s terrifying, really. More terrifying is the thought of how much the iWorld will have changed, and how quickly it will be changing, when our iToddlers are iGrownups.

Even over the past five years, social media and other technologies have radically altered the way we live, learn, work and interact. Never before has the exponential movement of what’s newest and latest and most faddish been more overwhelming. Never before has an attempt at keeping up with the iJoneses been more futile, the iStuff lining shop shelves already redundant and so last week.

How do we prepare kids for a life we won’t recognise? How will they (and we) cope with unimaginable change in a world that is already a dark, difficult, depraved place in which temptation and pain are guaranteed? Like I said, iTerror.

But God.

Two words that wash up oceans of peace.

What reassurance there is in knowing that if our kids know Christ – the same yesterday, today and forever – then whole continents of change can shift and erupt and explode all around them. They will not be impervious to the tremors. But they will stay straight-path, solid-rock steady. There is, after all, nothing new under the sun. Just new apps. What strength and relief there is in knowing that before iPod, iPad and iSnack there was iAM in eternity past. And when the last iTune has been played, iAM will still be iAM.

‘All the people of the earth are nothing compared to him. He does as he pleases among the angels of heaven and among the people of the earth. No one can stop him or say to him, ‘What do you mean by doing these things?’’ – Daniel 4:35
